A civil engineering student at City College, Eugene works as a carpenter in the summer.

He is known for his enthusiasm and well-planned training. As one admirer put it, Gene is "an absolute poster boy for the developmental possibilities of the club."

His return to racing after having a leg crushed by a refrigerator is an example of his mental toughness.
